The campaign, dubbed #ResponsibleTogether, will tackle binge drinking, underage drinking, illicit alcohol, drinking and driving, and gender-based violence, and was kicked-off last week with the company signing a memorandum of understanding with Lusaka City Council.
The Zambian Breweries team, led by country director Jose Moran, was joined by Lusaka City Council representatives in Lusaka’s Chawama area to kick-off distribution of the kits on Friday (September 18), just a week after President Edgar Lungu announced the partial opening of drinking places in his speech to Parliament.
The country’s largest brewer has said the move will improve the livelihoods of bars and night club owners and contribute to the recovery of the economy, which has been hard hit by COVID-19.
The smart drinking initiative seeks to educate and inform people about the ills of alcohol abuse and the benefits of smart drinking by reducing underage drinking, strengthening marketing codes of practice, increasing alcohol literacy, and reducing drink driving.
“Please continue enjoying responsibly in the comfort of your home. Do not visit drinking places in this pandemic. Bars and night clubs are still closed as a precautionary measure against the virus,” says ZB Country Director Jose Moran.
Zambian Breweries in collaboration with R&G Events had announced in May that the event would be held on 10th October, 2020 in Lusaka at the R&G Arena.

The decision by Zambian Breweries is as a result of a meeting the company held with the Bars and Night Clubs Owners Association of Zambia at which it offered to buy the empty crates at K39 per crate.
